Meditation

Meditation - Wednesday

This is a mixed level class, suitable for those who have experience of meditation and yoga practices, and those new to the work who wish to learn how to meditate.

Classes will focus initially on establishing a meditation technique, with the later addition of pranayama (breath awareness) and relaxation practices. There will also be an opportunity to study the basics of yoga philosophy.

For new students, the first session is a free ‘taster’. Thereafter, it is recommended that new students commit to and pay in advance for all 5 remaining sessions in the first half of term, to gain maximum benefit from the classes.

What can I expect in a Meditation Class?

The class normally begins with a short ‘Awareness Exercise’ designed to focus attention and establish a degree of stillness in preparation for the practices which follow. The second part consists of two or three Pranayama or breath awareness practices, to regulate and settle the breath prior to meditation. A lying down guided deep relaxation follows, either 61 points or yoga nidra (‘yogic sleep’) leading into a 10-15 minute guided meditation practice.

The final 20 minutes or so are given over to the study of a short text of a philosophical nature, taken from the world’s diverse traditions. This could include The Yoga Sutras, Socrates, The Bible or Eckhart Tolle – to name but a few.
